บทความข้างล่างนี้ ถูกเขียนขึ้นโดยนักเขียน/สถาปนิกท่านหนึ่ง เมื่ิอต้นปี 2554 ซึ่งนักเขียนท่านนี้ได้เคยนำเสนอบทความนี้ให้กับหนังสือพิมพ์หลายฉบับ แต่ก็ไม่มีหนังสือพิมพ์ฉบับไหนให้ความสนใจกับบทความนี้ ผมจึงได้ขออนุญาตนำบทความจากท่านนั้นมาใส่ไว้ใน ณ ที่นี้ครับ

ในช่วงเพียงทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา ประเทศไทยของเราประสบกับเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมอย่างรุนแรงในหลายๆภูมิภาค ส่งผลให้เกิดความเสียหายอย่างรุนแรงต่อชีวิต สภาพจิตใจและทรัพย์สินของผู้คนในพื้นที่ประสบภัย และระบอบเศรษฐกิจของประเทศอย่างประเมินค่าไม่ได้ ตามที่เป็นข่าวให้ติดตามกันในชั่วระยะเวลาไม่กี่เดือนที่ผ่านมา

จากเหตุภัยพิบัติที่เกิดขึ้นซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าส่งผลให้เกิดการตั้งคำถามจากผู้คนใน สังคมถึงความเป็นอยู่ของผู้คนในพื้นที่ที่เกิดอุทกภัย ว่าเราจะหลีกเลี่ยงหรือปรับตัวเช่นไรให้เกิดความเหมาะสมและพร้อมรับมือกับ สถานการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นอย่างฉับพลันในพื้นที่เสี่ยงภัย คำถามดังกล่าวทำให้หลายคนอาจจะคิดถึงการวางแผนการอยู่อาศัย แต่ก็ได้แต่ทำใจและคิดว่ามันเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่มีทางเกิดขึ้น เพราะคงเป็นไปได้ยากเนื่องจากภัยพิบัติเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นอย่างกระทันหัน

แต่ถ้าหากเราลองดูตัวอย่างในประเทศต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะประเทศเนเธอแลนด์เป็นตัวอย่างที่ชัดเจน ที่พวกเขาได้สร้างรูปแบบบ้านที่รองรับสภาวะน้ำท่วม เนื่องจากประเทศเนเธอ แลนด์มีระดับพื้นดินที่ต่ำกว่าระดับน้ำทะเลซึ่งคงเคยผ่านตาหลายๆคนจากสื่อ ต่างๆอันเนื่องมาจากกระเเสตื่นตูมน้ำท่วมโลกของคนไทยมาไม่มากก็น้อย ตัวอย่างนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าการออกแบบที่คำนึงถึงสภาพในอนาคตมีความเป็นไปได้ อย่างน้อยก็อาจจะช่วยบรรเทาเหตุการณ์เลวร้ายๆต่างๆได้ไม่มากก็น้อย เข้าทำนองกันไว้ดีกว่าแก้

เมื่อ อ่านมาถึงตรงนี้หลายคนอาจตั้งคำถามว่า สถาปนิกในประเทศไทยผู้มีบทบาทโดยตรงในการออกแบบก่อสร้าง ทำไมถึงไม่ลองคิดออกแบบรูปแบบที่อยู่อาศัยที่มีสภาวะเหมาะสมกับเหตุการณ์น้ำ ท่วมในประเทศไทยบ้าง

คำถาม นี้คงเป็นคำถามเดียวกันที่เกิดขึ้นกับ คุณชุตยาเวศ สินธุพันธุ์ เป็นสถาปนิกหนึ่งในผู้ที่ตระหนักถึงปัญหาดังกล่าว จึงได้ร่วมมือกับทีมสถาปนิก นักวิจัยทางสถาปัตยกรรม และวิศวกร เพื่อระดมสมอง โดยตั้งคำถามและออกแบบจนสำเร็จเป็นแนวคิดผลงาน “บ้านสะเทินน้ำสะเทินบก” (Amphibious House) ที่เหมาะสมกับสภาพของรูปแบบการใช้ชีวิตของผู้คนในปัจจุบัน

“เราเองเป็นสถาปนิก เป็นนักคิด ทำไมเราจะมัวนิ่งเฉย ไม่ลงมือทำอะไรเพื่อชั่วเหลือคนไทยด้วยกัน” เป็นคำพูดของ คุณชุตยาเวศ สถาปนิกหนุ่มไฟแรงผู้ที่พยายามบอกทุกคนว่าเขาเป็น Re-Thinker ไม่ใช่สถาปนิกทั่วไปที่ออกแบบแต่สิ่งสวยงามเป็นพื้นฐาน

“ก่อน อื่นเราคงต้องยอมรับว่าผู้คนในสังคมไทยในปัจจุบัน ได้ยอมรับและเคยชินกับการอยู่อาศัยบนบ้านที่อยู่ในระดับดิน ซึ่งเป็นผลมาจากเราได้รูปแบบการเดินทางและคมนาคมทางถนนซึ่งเป็นการเดินทาง แบบตะวันตกเข้ามาตั้งเเต่ครั้งการตัดถนนเจริญกรุง ในสมัยของรัชกาลที่ 4 ทำให้ คนไทยเรายึดรูปแบบการอยู่อาศัยบนพื้นดินนับแต่นั้นมา ซึ่งแตกต่างโดยสิ้นเชิงกับการอยู่อาศัยของคนไทยในสมัยก่อน ที่รับรู้กันว่า เมืองไทยเป็นเมืองน้ำ ด้วยพื้นที่ที่มีลักษณะราบลุ่มทำให้น้ำท่วมถึงตลอดปี ทำให้พื้นดินมีแร่ธาตุที่เหมาะสมอย่างยิ่งสำหรับการเพาะปลูก จึงทำให้ได้รัับการกล่าวขานว่า เมืองไทยเป็นเมืองอู่ข้าวอู่น้ำที่สำคัญแห่งหนึ่งของโลก ซึ่งจากภูมิปัญญาพื้นถิ่นของคนไทยในสมัยก่อน พวกเขาเข้าใจถึงสภาพเเวดล้อม และความเป็นไปของธรรมชาติอย่างเเท้จริง พวกเขาน้อมรับมันและปรับตัวเข้ากับการอยู่อาศัยได้อย่างลงตัว” คุณชุตยาเวศกล่าว

บ้าน ท่าขนอน จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี เป็นชุมชนพื้นบ้านที่ในอดีต ได้สร้างรูปแบบการอยู่อาศัยที่มีลักษณะสะเทินน้ำสะเทินบกกล่าวคือตัวบ้าน เรือจะสร้างอยู่บนแพ เมื่อน้ำท่วมบ้านก็จะถูกยกขึ้นลอยขึ้นไปเหนือระดับน้ำ ทำให้ผู้คนสามารถใช้ชีวิตภายในบ้านได้อย่างไม่ได้รับอันตราย แต่ปัจจุบัน รูปแบบการอยู่อาศัยเหล่านั้นได้สูญหายไปหมดเเล้ว เนื่องจากการรับรูปแบบการอยู่อาศัยบนพื้นดิน

ด้วย “รากทางความคิดดังกล่าว” จึงทำให้ คุณชุตยาเวศ และทีมงานได้ร่วมมือกัน ขุดไอเดียดังกล่าว สร้างรูปแบบการอยู่อาศัยที่เหมาะสมกับสภาวะน้ำท่วม โดยปรับรูปแบบให้สอดคล้องกับชีวิตร่วมสมัยมากขึ้นและใช้เทคโนโลยีการ ก่อสร้างในรูปแบบอุตสาหกรรมมามีส่วนช่วยให้การก่อสร้างมีความรวดเร็วเเละ ควบคุมคุณภาพได้ดีมากยิ่งขึ้น

บ้านสะเทินน้ำสะเทินบกมองภายนอกก็เป็นเหมือนบ้านที่สามารถอยู่อาศัยบนพื้นดินได้ อย่างปกติ ตอบรับกับวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของผู้คนในปัจจุบัน แต่สิ่งที่แตกต่างก็คือ ใต้อาคารได้สร้างระบบฐานรากหลุม (ditch) โดย ซ่อนระบบทุ่นเหล็กไว้ใต้อาคาร ซึ่งเมื่อเกิดสภาวะน้ำท่วมน้ำ น้ำจะไหลลงไปในหลุมเพื่อดันระบบทุ่นใต้อาคารให้ลอยสูงชึ้น ทำให้บ้านลอยน้ำขึ้นมานั่นเอง ในขณะเดียวกันเมื่อตัวบ้านลอยเหนือระดับน้ำ ระบบเสาที่ซ่อนอยู่ภายในเสาโครงสร้าง หรือเสาประคอง จะมีหน้าที่ยึดตำแหน่งของบ้านให้ลอยขึ้นสูงในแนวแกนแนวตั้งเท่านั้น ทำให้ตัวบ้านไม่ลอยไปที่อื่น ซึ่งเสาประคองได้ออกแบบรองรับให้สามารถลอยขึ้นเหนือระดับน้ำท่วมถึง 3 เมตร ซึ่งเป็นระดับน้ำท่วมที่ถือว่ารุนเเรงที่สุด ตามสถิติของกรมป้องกันและบรรเทาสาธารณะภัย นอกจากนั้น ระบบประคองยังมีระบบสายเคเบิ้ลสำรองสำหรับกรณีที่น้ำท่วมสูงมากเกินกว่า ระดับปกติด้วย

เมื่อ ติดตามถึงตรงนี้ หลายคนคงตั้งคำถามต่อมา ถึงการอยู่อาศัยซึ่งถ้าหากต้องอยู่ในสภาวะน้ำท่วม เป็นระยเวลานานนับเดือนจะสามารถใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในบ้านนี้ได้อย่างไร

“ในสภาวะปกติบ้านหลังนี้สามารถเชื่อมต่อกับไฟฟ้าหลักได้โดยตรง แต่เมื่อเกิดสภาวะน้ำท่วมอย่างรุนเเรงจนทำให้จำเป็นต้องตัดกระเเสไฟฟ้าหลัก ภายในบ้านก็ยังสามารถใช้พลังงานกระเเสไฟฟ้าได้จากไฟฟ้าที่ผลิตได้จาก แผงเซลล์สุริยะ (Solar Cell) และระบบกังหันลม ซึ่งจะถูกเก็บเป็นพลังงานไว้ในรูปแบบของแบตเตอรี่ (Battery) จำนวน 6 ก้อน ที่ถูกติดตั้งอยู่ภายใน เพื่อรองรับการอยู่อาศัยของทุกคนในบ้าน นอกจากนี้เรายังมีถังน้ำสำรอง ระบบกักเก็บน้ำฝน ระบบบำบัดน้ำเสียยามฉุกเฉิน และพื้นที่สำหรับกักตุนอาหารไว้บริโภคในยามเกิดเหตุการณ์น้ำท่วมด้วยอีกเช่น กัน ซึ่งรองรับเพียงพอต่อการอยู่อาศัยในพื้นที่อุทกภัยในระยะเวลาถึง 1 เดือน ซึ่งสามารถใช้ชีวิตอยู่ได้ก่อนหน่วยงานจากองค์กรภายนอกจะสามารถเข้าไปช่วยเหลือในพื้นที่ประสบภัยได้นั่นเอง”

สำหรับ การก่อสร้างทางสถาปนิกผู้ออกแบบก็ได้คำนึงถึงวิธีการก่อสร้างที่รวดเร็ว ที่สุด ประหยัดเวลา และการลงทุน โดยใช้วิธีการก่อสร้างกึ่งสำเร็จรูปจากโรงงานและนำไปประกอบยังพื้นที่เสี่ยงภัย

“ในส่วนของการก่อสร้างเราได้เลือกใช้วิธีระบบ Prefabrication ซึ่ง เป็นรูปแบบกึ่งสำเร็จรูปกล่าวคือการก่อสร้างองค์ประกอบของอาคารทั้งหมดจาก โรงงานแล้วนำไปติดตั้งในพื้นที่ ซึ่งข้อดีของระบบนี้คือสามารถนำไปติดตั้งในพื้นที่เสี่ยงภัยได้อย่างรวดเร็ว และควบคุมคุณภาพให้งานผลิตมีคุณภาพได้”

ใน เวลานี้การออกแบบ “บ้านสะเทินน้ำสะเทินบก” ได้ถูกออกแบบมาสองประเภท เพื่อรองรับการอยู่อาศัยของครอบครัวไทย ขนาดเล็ก รองรับผู้อยู่อาศัย 3-4 คน และขนาดกลาง รองรับผู้อยู่อาศัย 6-8 คน โดยการออกแบบคำนึงถึงความยืดหยุ่นในการใช้งาน ผู้อยู่อาศัยสามารถปรับใช้พื้นที่ภายในให้เหมาะสมกับความต้องการของแต่ละ ครอบครัว รวมไปถึงสามารถปรับใช้พื้นที่บางส่วนของบ้านให้เป็นพื้นที่เชิงพานิชย์ หรือเพื่อการใช้ประโยชน์ในการประกอบอาชีพที่เหมาะสมกันไปตามแต่ละครอบครัว

ทางทีมสถาปนิกผู้ออกแบบยังได้เสนอถึงวิสัยทัศน์ ที่สามารถพัฒนาต่อไปได้ในอนาคต โดยได้ออกแบบและเตรียมการวางผังที่จะสร้างชุมชนลอยน้ำ-สะเทินน้ำสะเทินบก (Amphibious Village) ที่ เหมาะสมกับประเทศไทยอย่างแท้จริง กล่าวคือทีมออกแบบยังได้พยายามทดลองออกแบบ อาคารประเภทอื่นๆ ให้สามารถลอยน้ำได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น อาคารพานิชย์ขนาดเล็กและขนาดใหญ่ อาคารสาธารณะหรือศาลาประชาคม และพื้นที่สาธารณะ (Public Space) ต่างๆ ที่จะช่วยสนับสนุนการอยู่อาศัยแบบชุมชนให้สมบูรณ์แบบ และตอบสนองการอยู่อาศัยของสังคมยุคปัจจุบันโดยที่อาคารเหล่านี้สามารถที่จะ ใช้ประโยชน์ในสภาวะปกติได้อย่างเป็นปกติและในขณะเดียวกันอาคารสาธารณะหลัง นี้สามารถปรับเปลี่ยน (Convert) เป็นพื้นที่รองรับการช่วยเหลือจากหน่วยงานภายนอกหรือเป็นศูนย์การแพทย์ฉุกเฉินในสภาวะน้ำท่วมได้อีกด้วยเช่นกัน

“สำหรับ การวางผังชุมชนเรายังคำนึงถึงการใช้งานยามเกิดเหตุอุทกภัยการช่วยเหลือที่ สามารถทำได้เป็นระบบมากกว่าชุมชนทั่วๆไป กล่าวคือการจัดผังเป็นชุมชนแบบกลุ่ม (Cluster) จะ ช่วยให้การช่วยเหลือยามเกิดอุทกภัยเป็นไปอย่างมีระบบระเบียบมากขึ้นหากเทียบ กับชุมชนไทยในปัจจุบันที่มีไม่มีการวางผังรองรับ อยู่อาศัยกันตามความต้องการ และในขณะเดียวกันเรายังพยายามที่จะเชื่อมชุมชนเหล่านี้เข้ากับ สถานีอนามัย สถานีตำรวจ โรงเรียน วัด และระบบโครงสร้างของเมือง (Infrastructure) ซึ่ง โดยปกติเป็นอาคารสองถึงสามชั้น ซึ่งสูงกว่าระดับน้ำท่วมถึงซึ่งหากน้ำท่วม ก็ยังสามารถใช้งานบนพื้นที่ชั้นสองหรือสามได้ยามเกิดเหตุน้ำท่วม” สถาปนิกกล่าวเสริม

หลาย คนเมื่อติดตามถึงตรงนี้อาจนึกสงสัยถึงงบประมาณเราจึงได้สอบถามคุณชุตยาเวศ ถึงราคาค่าก่อสร้างทั้งหมดว่าพอมีโอกาสได้ครอบครองหรือไม่

“ราคาค่าก่อสร้างของบ้านลอยน้ำทั้งสองหลังเป็นราคาที่สมเหตุสมผล เริ่มต้นที่ประมาณ 500,000 บาท แต่ถ้าหากภาครัฐหรือเอกชนให้การสนับสนุนมากขึ้น รวมถึงการส่งเสริมการก่อสร้างให้เป็นระบบอุตสาหกรรม ก็จะยิ่งลดค่าใช้จ่าย และเพิ่มทางเลือกให้กับประชาชนมากยิ่งขึ้น”

นาทีนี้คงอาจกล่าวได้ว่า ในขณะที่ผู้ใหญ่ในบ้านเมืองยังคงสร้างสีสันสงครามน้ำลายเลือกตั้งกันอยู่ อย่างน้อยก็ยังมีผู้คนที่คิดดีในสังคมและลงมือทำด้วยความจริงใจโดยไม่ได้ คำนึงถึงผลกำไรตอบแทน และอีกประเด็นที่สำคัญก็คือ การออกแบบบ้านสะเทินน้ำสะเทินบกนี้ อาจเป็นผลงานชิ้นหนึ่งที่เปิดโลกทัศน์ของสถาปนิกทั่วไปในการออกแบบ ให้พวกเขาได้รับรู้ว่า งานออกแบบยังมีมากกว่าการที่คำนึงถึงสุนทรียภาพ (Aesthetic) แต่สามารถสร้างสรรค์ ให้สังคมน่าอยู่มากขึ้นกว่าเดิมได้ด้วยวิธีคิดที่อุทิศหน้าที่ของตนเองเพื่อสังคมให้มากกว่าเดิม

When Chutayaves Sinthuphan, founder of Site-Specific Company Limited, was asked by a client to design a vacation home for her and her family near Khao Yai National Park, the first question that came into his mind was ‘What did he know to design a home for a Thai family in Thailand?’

Even though, he was born and raised in Thailand, his education and training in the field of architecture have come from his time living aboard. He spent his time traveling and working in several continents before setting himself back again in New York City.

Chutayaves set himself to become and architect because ‘shelter’ is one of the four basic needs in life. He believes that architecture is more than just a trophy of ones success in capitalism but one of the tools to help solving the world’s many problems. He follow his beliefs and move back to his roots, Thailand.

So, when this client asked him to design a home, he went and search for the answer to his question. He knew from the start that this home should be as eco-friendly as possible yet it has to be comfortable for the family. And the house must be simple to maintain and easy to live in.

One of the first thing he did was looking carefully at traditional Thai houses. The importance of Thai houses to him was not about the style, but the spirit of the architecture and behavior of its inhabitants. Yet replicating the traditional house is not enough to answer for modern Thai lifestyle, he need to find a new definition – his own definition of what a Thai house is. He found that Thai house is about living within its surrounding. The inhabitants retract to the first floor during the day to stay away from the heat, and move back to the second floor when the temperature is cooler in the evening. House sits in the orientation that allows the breeze to enter the living area all day long. These ideas became the starting point of this home.

Chutayaves made the idea suitable for modern lifestyle by taken the same basic programs of the traditional house and re-organized them in the new way for the new house. Where as the first floor of traditional Thai house are completely open to the elements, the first floor of the new house is enclosed with glass walls to retain the feeling of openness.

Supporting columns are still visible on the outside to emphasis the root of the idea that the house is lifted of the ground. Large amount of windows allow the breeze to flow through without being disturbed. The family can live in the home during the day without the need of air-conditioning.

The idea behind the second floor of the tradition houses contain the bedrooms which are used mostly at night, so it can be hot during the day will not work for modern lifestyle where each of the inhabitant needs more privacy anytime of the day. The second floor in the new house still contains the bedrooms, but it is design with exterior walls that are made up of two layers of brick walls. The air mass that sits between the brick walls act as an effective natural insulation to prevent the heat from entering the living space. Another external layer of the composite cement board that have been coated with earth-colored plaster is added to the exterior to ensure that the heated air is circulated naturally away from the building. This external layer also provides the techno – craft aesthetic of the house that is an over-scale play on the traditional wood siding.

The courtyard of the traditional house is relocated to the roof in the new house, so the family can be more connected to the trees and the amazing view across the valley.

To ensure that the breeze come through the house, air displacement system has been incorporated in the design of the house. Living room has been design with single-height, double-height and triple-height spaces.

The air mass in tower gets heated up and flows upward to the outside and naturally pulling the cooler air into the first and the second floors. This natural ventilation system can be designed and adapted into any climates thought out the tropical areas.

There are several other systems that are included as part of this house such as rain water collection system, entry point water filtration system and etc. Also, the home is designed so that solar and wind generation systems can be adapted when the technology has reached consumer price range.

In the end, we believe that we have starting to define the new definition of Thai architecture by simply looking into the spirit of Thai houses rather than just imitation of form. Also, we believe that we have succeeded in creating a simple eco-friendly home for the family.

The past couple of years, one of the most significant changes that are happening to Thailand has been the flood problem.  Sometime the flood occurred in communities where there was no history of flood.  Sometime it occurred un-seasonally in flood prone regions.  Many times, the floods occurred at much higher and much stronger than in the past.

Flood is one of the worst natural disasters.  Devastation that is the result of flood affects the community deeply.  Belongings and history sometime wash away with the water.

We are looking for a permanent solution for these communities.  If flood problem is getting worse every year, what must be changed to these communities for them to be able to live with the flood?  Will simple solution such as relocation solve the problem?

When we look back at the history of settlements of Siam (former name of Thailand), we see that all of the settlements were situated along the rivers.  Both Ayutthaya and Bangkok were called ‘Venice of the East’ by western merchants.  How did they cope with flood in the past?

The obvious answer was that houses were built on stilts.  Another obvious answer was that some of the homes were built as rafts.  Building homes with stilts or as rafts was fine when the communities were focused along the river.  But since the modern communities are now focused on the roads, how would an architect design a house that sits on the ground and can survive the flood?

Through our research, there were a few communities in southern Thailand that had built their homes as raft on short pilings.  So we embraced this idea as a starting point.

Our ‘Amphibious Houses’ are designed using prefabricated steel floatation system.  This floatation device sits in the trench under the house for two reasons.  One, the entire system can be hidden, so the house does not look too unusual from the surrounding context.  Another reason is that since the depression collects water when it rains.  As the water level rises, the depression gets filled with water and the house will be pre-buoyant in case of flood.

The homes will be built using prefabricated panels with steel framing.  This construction method allows that homes to be much lighter than traditional construction yet remain very strong for everyday abuse.

In time of flood, the most important thing is the survival.  The design of amphibious homes has built-in back-up systems including food storage, rain collection and power generation systems.  These homes are latticed together in group of 5 to 10 to form a mini community in time of flood.  This allows mini community to be self sustain for a longer period, and eases the arrival of external help.

Typically, there are four building types that make up Thai community.

Residential buildings are homes to the residence.  The size of home is normally based upon the number of the family members.

Commercial buildings are usually small open buildings that being use for small shops, farm stands or food stalls.

Residential and commercial hybrid buildings are also common in these communities.  Adaptability and flexibility allows that each inhabitant to create and personalize their homes.

Civic buildings in these communities are usually designed to be multi-purposes.  Residences adapt and modify the building for use depending on the event of the day.

This road sign fence was created by the Greensboro, Alabama chapter of YouthBuild.  It encloses a playground constructed by the Rural Studio in 1997 and currently used by a daycare center.

There are a few very clever use of the signage in very specific locations such as the gate.

At the other locations, the signs become the graphic elements creating interesting illusion.

New York Times recently published an article about a great architect – Peter Zumthor in the New York Times Magazine.

I found this graphic depicting the wave heights caused by the recent earthquake from NOAA website.  It was sad to realize that such a beautiful image is a representation of a horrible incident.  My best of luck to all those whom were effected by the earthquake and the tsunami.

We recently completed the installation of our latest project in Phuket – a tropical island in the south of Thailand.

The design of this project was adapted from the design of our MDL 5.5×6 unit.  The slight modification to the design tuned it into a reception area for a vacation rental property.

We have been busy traveling down to the island of Phuket in the south of Thailand.  Here is one of the cottage for a client who owns a rubber plantation there.
